The latest results regarding the dangers of plastic water bottles has been recently documented and reported by Sciencedaily.com, a very reputable resource online for health information and the latest findings resulting from many legit experiments and research projects.

In essence, toxic compounds were found to leach from the plastic in plastic water bottle containers into the mineral water. These compounds leaching to the water were found to be estrogenic in nature. These studies on the estrogen effect of the compounds leaching from plastic bottles were published in Springer’s journal the Environmental Science and Pollution Research.

These estrogen substances are man-made, and are basically chemicals that act as an estrogen hormone. The science community calls them “xenohormones”. The scientists in charge of the research were Jorg Oehlmann and Martin Wagner from the Department of Ecotoxicology from the Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany.

Their research examined over 20 brands of mineral water sold in stores. There were 9 glass bottles, nine plastic bottles, and 2 water containers made of a composite packaging, a mix of cardboard and a plastic lining. First they did a composite test of the water and then they carried out a “reproduction” test where they used the New Zealand mud snail to surmise the reproductive potency f the man-made estrogen compounds leaching out of the plastic bottles.

They found estrogen contamination in 60 percent of the 20 brands examined. They found estrogenic compounds in the glass containers as well as the plastic containers, but only 33% of the water in glass containers contained the hormones as opposed to the 78 percent found in the plastic bottles.

The snail tests involved breeding the New Zealand snails within both the plastic and glass bottles. The results yielded about twice the amount of embryos born within the plastic bottles than were born in the glass bottles.

These findings strongly reinforce the notion and advice to try to increasingly get rid of plastic containers, especially those we use on a daily basis such as our water bottles.
